What happened in 1893 was an illegal act of war: U.S. Marines invaded a peaceful country without cause. The so-called “annexation” that followed was never ratified by treaty. And if you were born in Hawaiʻi or to parents who were Hawaiian Subjects, you are still a Hawaiian Subject today. That legal identity has never been erased.
